              Holy Meteors

Monastery of Transfiguration of Our Lord once called "» Platýs Líthos " (large stone), but it Athanasius (later St. Athanasius Meteorsky) renamed it "Meteoron" (which hangs in the air) due to the fact that it was located on the highest of all the rocks around.   

The rock upon which was built a monastery, located on the western edge of the array of stone and is the largest among them. This rock has a height of 619 meters above sea level and 416 meters from the river Pineos. The area of ​​the rocks of about 6 hectares. With the rise of rock has an elevation of 250 meters, and 115 steep and not equal to the height of the steps leading to the entrance to the monastery.
